Free public transport for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day

Public transport will be free on 31 December 2019 and 1st January 2020 across the Grand Duchy. Transport will be free from 4am on 31 December 2019 until 12am on 1st January 2020 but this applies to 2nd class travel only, all 1st class travel on the national railway network must still be paid for.

As is the case every year, the Verkéiersverbond is also providing information about special timetables and services for public transport over the Christmas and New Year period.

Christmas Period 

In general, and as is the case each year, all public transport will stop running from 8pm on Tuesday 24 December 2019 (Christmas Eve).

The same applies to Adapto special transport services for people with reduced mobility. This service will run as follows:

  • Tuesday, 24 December: no transport available after 8pm (the same as public transport)
  • Wednesday, 25 December: transport available between 8am and 10pm
  • Thursday, 26 December: transport available between 7am and 10pm
  • Tuesday, 31 December: transport available between 7am and 12am
  • Wednesday, 1st January: transport available between 8am and 10pm

Adapto must be booked sufficiently in advance. Customers may have to make allowances due to the limited number of vehicles available.

Trains:

Throughout 25 December and 26 December 2019, CFL shall provide transport based on its public holiday timetable.

Buses:


AVL, CFL, RGTR and TICE bus networks will stop running at 8pm on 24 December. They will be back in service around 8am on Wednesday 25 December 2019 (Christmas Day) and will run to a Sunday and public holiday timetable. On Thursday 26 December 2019, buses will run to the usual Sunday and public holiday timetable. The TICE Late Night Bus will not run between Wednesday 25 December and Thursday 26 December 2019.

The City of Luxembourg Call-a-Bus service will run as normal during the Christmas period, except on 24 December when the service will operate only until 8pm instead of until 12am.

Tram:

During the Christmas period, the tram will run to the following timetable:

Tuesday 24 December:

  • From Luxexpo to Stäreplaz/Étoile: Luxexpo last departure at 8.24pm
  • From Stäreplaz/Étoile to Luxexpo: Étoile last departure at 8.42pm

Wednesday 25 December:

From Luxexpo to Stäreplaz/Étoile:

  • Luxexpo first departure: 7.04am
  • Luxexpo last departure: 11.34pm

From Stäreplaz/Étoile to Luxexpo:

  • Stäreplaz/Étoile first departure: 7.22am
  • Stäreplaz/Étoile last departure: 11.52pm

Thursday 26 December:

The tram will operate to Sunday times and frequencies.

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day 

Trains:

CFL will provide transport throughout the night of 31 December 2019 into 1st January 2020 on all national railway lines. Between midnight and 6am, special trains will run each hour and in both directions:

  • Between Troisvierges and Rodange (via Luxembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette)
  • Between Wasserbillig and Rodange (via Luxembourg and Dippach)
  • Between Luxembourg and Kleinbettingen

There will be connections available between these trains in Luxembourg City.

Buses:

On Tuesday 31 December 2019, CFL, RGTR and TICE buses (with the night service) will run according to their usual timetables.

The City of Luxembourg has announced that on New Year’s Eve, i.e. the night of 31 December 2019 into 1st January 2020, the seven City Night Bus lines, as well as part of the regular bus service will continue to operate throughout the night. This means that some regular lines will run as usual during the evening, and then after the normal timetable would usually end, they will continue to operate with the same frequency until approximately 5.30am on New Year’s Day. The City Night Bus lines will run as usual until 6.30am on New Year’s Day. Details of which lines will be running will be published on the website: sylvestre.vdl.lu

On Wednesday 1st January 2020, New Year’s Day, service on the AVL, CFL (bus) and RGTR networks is scheduled to start again around 8am. However, the TICE network will operate according to its standard public holiday timetable.

For people with reduced mobility, the Call-a-Bus service will continue to run after midnight and be available until 5am on 1st January 2020. To ensure that transport is available across the country, many municipalities have organised special services, details of which can be obtained from the municipal services concerned.

Tram:

From Tuesday 31 December 2019 to Wednesday 1st January 2020, from 9.45pm onwards the tram will run every 15 minutes without interruption until early in the morning:

  • From Luxexpo to Stäreplaz/Étoile: last departure 5.45am
  • From Stäreplaz/Étoile to Luxexpo: last departure 6.03am

On Wednesday 1st January:

  • Luxexpo first departure: 7.04am
  • Luxexpo last departure: 11.34pm

Lifts at Pfaffenthal and Grund

The City of Luxembourg has announced that the lift connecting the Saint-Esprit Plateau to Grund will be open as usual from 6.30am to 2am, from 24 to 26 December inclusive, and the lift connecting Pfaffenthal to the Upper City will be accessible between 5.45am and 1am during the same period.

During New Year’s Eve, the lift connecting Pfaffenthal to the Upper City and the lift connecting the Saint-Esprit Plateau to Grund will be accessible throughout the night.

Ticket offices and other facilities

The Mobility Centre (Mobilitéitszentral) at Luxembourg City Railway Station will close on 24 December at 7pm and open again on Wednesday 25 December at 9am. The Call Center will be open during the same hours. The Mobilitéitszentral at Belval-University Railway Station will be closed during the public holidays.

The AVL Info-Box ticket offices at 20-22, rue des Bains will close at 5pm on 24 and 31 December 2019.

The TICE ticket office at Esch-sur-Alzette Railway Station will be open during the morning on 24 and 31 December between 7.45am and 11.45am and will be closed on 25 and 26 December. The Call Center will be open on 24 and 31 December from 8am to 12pm and from 1pm to 5pm and will be closed on 25 and 26 December.
