PUBLIC TRANSPORT OVER CHRISTMAS AND THE NEW YEAROn 19 December 2018
Special holiday timetables
The Verkéiersverbond announces information about the special public transport services that, as every year, will be operated over Christmas and the New Year.
In general, and as happens every year, all public transport will be suspended from 8pm on Monday 24 December 2018 (Christmas Eve).
The same applies to Adapto,the special transport services for people with reduced mobility and its operating hours are as follows:
- Monday 24 December: transport stops at 8pm (the same as public transport)
- Tuesday 25 December: transport is provided between 8am and 10pm
- Wednesday 26 December: transport is provided between 7am and 10pm
- Monday 31 December: transport is provided between 7am and midnight
- Tuesday 1 January: transport is provided between 8am and 10pm
Adapto transport must be booked sufficiently in advance and customers may have to make adjustments to fit with the constraints arising from a limited number of vehicles being available.
On 24 December 2018, the CFL Information Service and “InfoPoint” at Luxembourg Railway Station will close at 8pm. On Christmas Day, tickets desks for purchasing international tickets at Luxembourg Railway Station will be open from 6am. However, ticket offices at other CFL stations will be open according to Public Holiday opening hours.
CFL will provide transport throughout 25 December and 26 December, with trains running on a Public Holiday timetable.
Buses on the AVL, CFL, RGTR and TICE networks will stop operating on the evening of 24 December at 8pm and will only resume service at 8am on Tuesday 25 December 2018 (Christmas Day) and will run to a Sunday and Public Holiday timetable. On Wednesday 26 December 2018, buses will run to a normal Sunday and Public Holiday timetable. The TICE Late Night Bus will not run between Tuesday 25 December (Christmas Day) and Wednesday 26 December 2018.
The City of Luxembourg Call-a-Bus service will operate normally during the Christmas period, except on 24 December when it will only run until 8pm, instead of until midnight.
Details of the last buses to run on the AVL network on 24 December, as well as the first buses to run on 25 December and 1st January, are given on the sylvestre.vdl.lu website.
For the ‘Zürcher Bal’ on 25 December 2018, special shuttle buses will operate.
During the Christmas period, the tram will operate according to the following timetable:
- Monday 24 December:
Luxexpo to Stäreplaz/Étoile: Luxexpo last departure: 8.44pm
Stäreplaz/Étoile to Luxexpo: Étoile last departure: 9.04pm
- Tuesday 25 December:
Luxexpo to Stäreplaz/Étoile:
Luxexpo first departure: 7.34am Luxexpo last departure: 11.34pm
Stäreplaz/Étoile to Luxexpo:
Stäreplaz/Étoile first departure: 7.54am
Stäreplaz/Étoile last departure: 11.54pm
- Wednesday 26 December:
The tram will operate a Sunday timetable.
Mobilitéitszentral / Info-Box:
The Mobilitéitszentral at Luxembourg Railway Station will close for business on 24 December at 7pm (at the latest) and will re-open on Tuesday 25 December at 8am. The Call Centre will operate the same hours. The Mobilitéitszentral at Belval-University Railway Station is closed for public holidays.
AVL “Info-Box” offices at 20-22, Rue des Bains will close at 5pm on 24 and 31 December 2018.
The New Year Period
CFL will provide transport throughout the night from 31 December 2018 to 1 January 2019 on all national railway lines. Between midnight and 6am, special trains will run every hour and in both directions:
- Between Troisvierges and Rodange (via Luxembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette)
- Between Wasserbillig and Rodange (via Luxembourg and Dippach)
- Between Luxembourg and Kleinbettingen
Connections between these trains will be provided in Luxembourg City.
On Monday 31 December 2018, CFL, RGTR and TICE buses (with their night service) will operate according to their normal timetable.
The City of Luxembourg has announced that for New Year’s Eve (St-Sylvestre), i.e. the night from 31 December 2018 to 1January 2019, a regular service will continue to operate all night on most of the lines. This means that lines will carry on running with the same frequency as during the evening and the timetable will be extended from the final departure on the normal timetable and carry on until approximately 5.30am on New Year’s Day morning. Details of the lines that are running will be published on the sylvestre.vdl.lu website.
On Tuesday 1st January 2019, New Year’s Day, service on the AVL, CFL (bus) and RGTR networks is scheduled to start again around 8am. However, the TICE network will run to a Public Holiday timetable.
For those with reduced mobility, the Call-a-Bus timetable has been extended beyond midnight to provide a service until 5am on 1 January 2019. Anyone wishing to use this service is asked to book their Call-a-Bus following the usual arrangements by calling 4796-4797. More information is available on callabus.vdl.lu.
To ensure that transport is available across the country, many municipalities have organised special services. Please consult the respective municipal department for further information.
Special shuttle buses will be provided for the ‘Bréisseler Bal’ on 28 December 2018.
From Monday 31 December 2018 to 1 January 2019, the tram will run continuously. From 9pm, there will be a tram every 15 minutes.

“Pfaffenthal” and “Grund” Lifts
The City of Luxembourg has announced that the lift connecting the Plateau du Saint-Esprit to the Grund will be open according to its normal timetable, from 6.30am to 2am, from 24 to 26 December inclusive, and the lift connecting Pfaffenthal to the Upper City will be accessible between 5.45am and 1am during the same period.
On New Year’s Eve, the lift connecting Pfaffenthal to the Upper City and the lift connecting the Grund to the Upper City will be accessible all night.
